I find this disgusting

Alright, ages since I wrote anything here but I just had to talk to someone about this. I'm sure most of you read about the murder of the 14 yr old girl "Aarushi" in Noida last month. Every now and then, I read about any progress made in the case. One word for the way it has been covered by the media- DISGUSTING. Instead of focussing on 2 things, namely who committed the crime and sharing grief and feeling the hurt and pain that any loved ones might be feeling, all I read about is her "character". What the hell does that mean anyway? Now a murder victim needs a character certificate from these stupid people? And does whatever they term "good character" entitle one to more respect (especially after dying!)? Do they even think before putting such stuff in print. And its not just the media; its the police as well. Every time they "think" they have a clue, they announce their next suspect and the media goes to town with it. What ever happened to reporting? Seriously, what's wrong with people? Is this what the audience wants? Sensationalized grief!? I don't have words to express my disbelief.

I couldnt agree with you more. It is also clear that this excuse for journalism is not restricted to one or two media outlets, but is prevalent across the spectrum. Any article I read talks about "the sensational murder" or the "possible honour killing." There's nothing sensational, nor is there any honour in the murder of a fourteen year old.

That this murder case was handed over to the CBI so soon also raises questions about the police force. But, to be fair, the overpowering media madness is something that people in most free countries are finding hard to handle. Of all civil liberties, freedom of speech is the most abused.

Powerful words there, vugs! I totally agree with essence of what you said.

Police in every state is in such a sorry state. The investigations are shoddy, callous and the police often collude with the criminals. The Supreme Court issued guidelines for police reforms and has pulled up states as to why they were not implementing them.

Without a media/public outcry, states will not let go of their strangle-hold on the police.

I have seriously begun to believe that if only the police and the criminal justice system in India were to be set right, everything else will fall in place.
