(Second) Song of the day, Oct 29, 2005

The previous post had a song with a great start. I am tempted to post the following song -- one of the best finales I have ever heard-- though most junta would have heard this song before.

Song: Mettupodu (listen) (also on napster)
Singer: S P Balasubramiam (who else) and Kadri Gopalnath (sax)
Album: Duet
Composer: A R Rahman

Song: Suvvi Suvvi listen
Singers: S P Balasubramaniam and S Janaki
Album: Swathi Muthyam
Composer: Ilayaraja

Song: Lali Lali listen
Singer: P Susheela
Album: Swathi Muthyam
Composer: Ilayaraja

If you want an intro to telugu film music these are the songs you MUST listen to. SPB is god -- he is simply brilliant in Suvvi Suvvi. The prelude to this song is really cool. Lali Lali is a lullaby sung to perfection. The lyrics for both the songs are simply beautiful. The movie itself is probably one of kamal hassan's and radhika's best performances.

Download songs for 10 cents...

This line is to convince you dk's that the following is not an ob spam

I don't know what the going rate is for mp3's these days, but mp3search.ru lets you download songs for only $0.10. But I haven't tried this out myself: I don't know whether it's even fully legal in the first place, and I don't know all the fine print, so somebody give it a shot and put fundaes ;-). The music collection is pretty extensive, seems to have listings for all popular bands, and advertises songs at 192 kbps.

If the site's search engine cups, you can always fall back on google
(e.g.: site:www.mp3search.ru "red hot chilli peppers")

Song of the Day, Oct 27, 2005

Song: Act III, Canzonetta Sul'aria
Album: Le Nozze di Figaro (Marriage of Figaro)
Composer: Mozart

" ... I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singin' about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they were singin' about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared, higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away. And for the briefest of moments, every last man at Shawshank felt free. ... "
- Red, Shawshank Redemption

Some other beautiful pieces from this opera ...

Song: Act III, Dove Sono
Album: Le Nozze di Figaro (Marriage of Figaro)

Song: Pal listen
Singer: Strings (feat. Sagarika)
Album: Dhaani

Though this song is featured in Strings' latest album, this song was composed a few years ago when Strings and Sagarika jammed together for the Channel V program Jammin'. The guitars are very typical of Bilal Maqsood, but the violins add a new dimension to the track.

Also checkout 'Najanay Kyun' from the same album.

Singer/Group: O-zone (and Haiducii)

Yes that's true ... this song is buzzing all over the web ever since this dude Gary Brolsma " ... lip-synced the song energetically on his webcam ...". I will let you guys go to the wikipedia link for more details. (This is a link to the original lip-sync video. Seems this is one of the most viewed videos on the web.)

Else, the song is nice dance number. I asked Liviu - the lyrics mean absolutely nothing!

(Second) Song of the day, Oct 13, 2005

Starter's enthu i guess. But more so because a freind of mine told me about this song and on second hearing it is quite good.

Song: Katril Varum Geethame listen
Album: Oru Naal oru Kanavu
Composer: Ilayaraja

The song has a very simple melody (heard it is kalyani raagam) and lyrics and in its simplicity lies all its beauty. The one thing that I do not like about the song is that the female singers are too high pitched for this slow song. (either that or my screwed up headphones are making it sound bad) And the hindi accent is perceptible in many parts of the song. Would have liked it much more if tamil singers had sung it.

Song: Death and the Maiden (on napster)
Composer: Schubert (string quartet)

I heard this classical piece only a couple of days back when I saw the Roman Planski movie of the same name. The movie is about a girl (sigourney weaver) meets a doctor (ben kingsley) who had tortured her in the past. The music piece makes a substantial appearance in the movie -- specifically, the doctor plays this to "soothe" the tortured girl. This composition beautifully brings out this irony. The movie (which is an adaptation of a play) is a must see. Death and the Maiden is a must hear.
