Puzzle for the Day, Apr 26, 2006

When muthu, I and others were at a conference recently, we were solving some simple math and logic puzzles whenever the talks became boring. The puzzle solving experience was quite nice and I thought if any of us come across nice puzzles (or even pj level puzzles) we should share it on the blog! People who come up with answers should post a comment so that we can compare answers and the possibly lateral thought processes (this is usually the most interesting/enetertaining part).

OK. Today's puzzle (muthu already knows ... many of you might have heard this before )

There is a 4 ft by 8 ft rectangular table with a flat surface. There are N 1 inch diameter coins arranged on the table such that the whole 4ft by 8ft surface is covered by the coins (obviously the coins can overlap). Suppose you are given 4N 1/2 inch diameter coins, can you or can you not completely cover the surface of the 4ft by 8ft table ?? If yes, give the arrangement of coins. If no, prove that you cannot!

What if you cut the flat surface into 4 2ft x 4ft pieces and use the smaller coins to cover it using the same pattern.
