OP Nayyar

One of the greatest music directors, OP Nayyar passed away recently. I gre up listening to his songs as he was one of dad's all time favourites. As most of you probably read, he holds the distinction of NEVER having recorded a song with Lata! For that time, it was a big deal, as Lata was singing almost every song. Anyway, so basically Asha Bhonsle was pretty much introduced and made famous by OP Nayyar. He was known for his ghoda-gadi style songs, punjabi songs (uden jab jab zulfein teri), jazz like songs (babuji dheere chalna, aaiye meherbaan) and in general, songs full of beat and rhythm.

Its hard to pick one song, but anyway, I'm listing 3 of his gems:

1. Song: Jayiye aap kahan jaayenge
Film: Mere Sanam (1965)

2. Song: Bahut Shukriya, badi meherbani
Film: Ek Musafir, ek hasina

3. Pyar par bas
Film: Sone ki chidiya (1958)- absolutely mindblowing combo of OP Nayyar, Talat's voice and Asha's refrain

Song of the Day, Jan 13, 2006

Hi everyone ... It was a long time since i blogged ...

Vishal Bharadwaj, one of the geniuses in Indian cinema, has come up with a new movie (and an enthralling sountrack) called "Blue Umbrella". As usual he raises the bar for film music in this album. The title track is really nice --

Song: Aasmani Chatri (listen)
Composer: Vishal Bharadwaj

The rest of the soundtrack is really great too. Listen and enjoy ...

African Indians

I never knew until now (well, about an hour ago, to be precise) that the British brought into India quite a few Africans to be used as slaves. Known as the Siddis, and numbered at around 20-30 thousand, they now live in Gujarat, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Apparently they are now almost completely assimilated into the local cultures. Only their music and dance forms hold a clue to their origins.

Got to know this via this page inside the "Kamat's PotPourri" site. (This website btw has a fascinating collection of pictures and articles on India, and many on Karnataka in particular)
Here's the obligatory Wiki article

Every passing day makes me realize how much more I don't know about India (and the world) ...
